Visual Communication of Object Concepts at Different Levels of Abstraction

چکیده

People can produce drawings of specific entities (e.g., Garfield), as well general categories "cat"). What explains this ability to such varied even highly familiar object concepts? We hypothesized that drawing objects at different levels abstraction depends on both sensory information and representational goals, intended portray a recently seen preserve more detail than those represent category. Participants drew cued either with photo or category label. For each cue type, half the participants aimed draw exemplar; other found label-cued were most recognizable basic level, whereas photo-cued exemplar least recognizable. Together, these findings highlight importance task context for explaining how people use communicate visual concepts in ways.

Visual Analogies at Multiple Levels of Abstraction

We describe a method for constructing a teleological model of an unlabelled 2D line drawing by analogy to a known model of a drawing with similar structure. The source case is represented as a schema that contains its line drawing and its teleological model represented at multiple levels of abstraction: the lines and intersections in the drawing, the shapes, the structural components and connec...

Learning at Different Levels of Abstraction

Previous category learning research and the SUSTAIN (Supervised and Unsupervised STratified Adaptive Incremental Network) model of category learning suggest that preferred category level (in a hierarchy of categories) shifts towards lowerlevel (i.e., more specific) categories when stimuli are perceived to be more distinctive. This shift is in accord with work in expertise. In their domain of ex...

Decoding actions at different levels of abstraction.

Brain regions that mediate action understanding must contain representations that are action specific and at the same time tolerate a wide range of perceptual variance. Whereas progress has been made in understanding such generalization mechanisms in the object domain, the neural mechanisms to conceptualize actions remain unknown. In particular, there is ongoing dissent between motor-centric an...
